In einigen Wochen wird eine neue, vermutlich revolutionäre Suchmaschine mit dem Namen ‚Wolfram|Alpha‘, an den Start gehen. Sie wurde unter Leitung des Mathematikers Dr. Stephen Wolfram,  Gründer des Unternehmens Wolfram Research mit seinem weltbekannten Softwareprodukt Mathematica, entwickelt.

Welche Erwartungen sich nach der ersten Vorstellung  am Berkman Center for Internet & Society der Harvard-Universität mit der neuen Suchmaschine verbinden, lassen sich an Schlagzeilen wie z.B. der eines Artikels des Independent ablesen: ‚An invention that could change the internet forever‚. Wolfram Alpha soll auf vollständige Fragen von Personen korrekte Antworten liefern können; die Suchmaschine verweist hierbei nicht mehr nur auf relevante Quellen, sondern beantwortet die Anfrage mit konkreten Ergebnissen. Wolfram Alpha greift nach silicon.de hierbei auf eine Datenbank mit wissenschaftlich überprüften Informationen zu, welche nicht nach Stichworten und Relevanz sondern basierend auf ‚Natural-Language-Algorithmen‘ organisiert sind. Mit diesen Algorithmen sei die Auswertung und Zusammenstellung von Informationen gemäß unserer menschlichen Sprache möglich. Der Independent illustriert im selben Artikel das Innovationspotenzial und das Verhalten der Suchmaschine wie folgt:

The real innovation, however, is in its ability to work things out „on the fly“, according to its British inventor, Dr Stephen Wolfram. If you ask it to compare the height of Mount Everest to the length of the Golden Gate Bridge, it will tell you. Or ask what the weather was like in London on the day John F Kennedy was assassinated, it will cross-check and provide the answer. Ask it about D sharp major, it will play the scale. Type in „10 flips for four heads“ and it will guess that you need to know the probability of coin-tossing. If you want to know when the next solar eclipse over Chicago is, or the exact current location of the International Space Station, it can work it out.

Stephen Wolfram kündigt die Veröffentlichung von Wolfram|Alpha in seinem Blog wie folgt an:

Some might say that Mathematica and A New Kind of Science are ambitious projects. But in recent years I’ve been hard at work on a still more ambitious project—called Wolfram|Alpha. And I’m excited to say that in just two months it’s going to be going live. (…) It’s going to be a website: www.wolframalpha.com. With one simple input field that gives access to a huge system, with trillions of pieces of curated data and millions of lines of algorithms. (…) I think it’s going to be pretty exciting. A new paradigm for using computers and the web. That almost gets us to what people thought computers would be able to do 50 years ago!
